Ka'enobi are:- Dave Onions (Vocals, guitars and mandolins), Dave Kelly (Guitar, banjo and vocals), Chris Nokes (bass) and Joélle Barker (Percussion and vocals); an eclectic with a wealth of experience between them.
The set started with 'Train Of Fools' and progressed nicely through a variety of numbers such as 'The Gamble', '6 Degrees Of Separation', 'Aftershock' and 'Winter Song' (...and more!!).
Their songs are best described as an acoustic folk/jazz/blues fusion punctuated with infectious African/Asian style percussion. Lyrically, the songs fall on the political statement side but don't let that put you off - it's by no means in-ya-face, soapbox stuff.
The band looked relaxed with three of the four remaining seated throughout the set; Dave Onions being the odd-one-out, standing, bobbing and weaving, accentuating the music constantly.
These guys enjoy what they're doing and the enjoyment filters down from the stage and you can quickly feel yourself smiling as you listen to the almost hypnotic, percussive playing style of Onions. Dave Kelly's sympathetic, finger picking guitar style follows and interweaves with Onions' guitar and vocals as Chris Nokes' incessant bass gently controls the rhythm. The whole thing is punctuated and driven by the superb percussion of Jo.
Last in the running list was a new number, 'Trust', before the band were called back for their encore version of 'The Cost' which is a slightly more funky song covering the issues of cheap labour, child labour, exploitation of the workers etc., etc.. (I think!)
