Play 90 second soundbite of 'Ace Of Spades' @ 'CD quality'
Millard's version of the rock monster is almost unrecognisable with its slow haunting 'gait', scratchy demeanour and 'posh' 'orchestrated' backdrop. But, as electro and 'now' as it is, Millard still manages to make 'Ace of Spades' sound totally menacing and intimidating; hardly uplifting stuff this but even so, there's something that draws you in as Millard whispers out her words against the ebb and flow and raging turmoil of 'strings' and 'things'. It's a big sound and, like the original, one that definitely benefits from maxing out the volume! 'Ace Of Spades' by Jyl Millard kinda straddles genre now; once solidly rock, now teasing pop, taunting electro and toying with dance, Millard's churnin', grubby, almost experimental take is as greasy and sweaty as it is silky and sexy.
'Slo & Crazy' is the equally obtuse and haunting 'B' side; more genre bending from Millard as she grinds out this dark but exotic sounding teaser which acts as a perfect accompaniment to 'Ace of Spades'. Jyl Millard proves that, with foresight and innovation, even the most blatantly genre-set songs can be re-visited and made to suit modern trends. 'Ace of Spades' by Jyl Millard will shock many and thrill others; the former will renounce Millard's version and refuse to accept it as 'true and proper' whilst the latter will welcome its originality and sheer guts - after all, the sign of a really great song is that it can stand the test of time and withstand modernisation - Ace Of Spades' is an all-time 'classic' and Jyl Millard has simply given it a new feel, new meaning and potentially a new audience.
