Play 90 second soundbite of 'Funky News' @ 'CD quality'
This massive package offers nearly two hours of contemporary live blues rammed with stunning musicianship and near-tangible passion for the form.
Hailing from the Netherlands, guitar virtuoso bluesman Julian Sas gives it just as it should be; live, warts'n'all (not that there are any 'warts' here), totally grounded and honest. The Sas band comprises Sas (guitars and vocals), Tenny Tahamata (bass) and Rob Heijne (drums), a fairly traditional sounding line-up, a no-frills three-piece. But wow, how they lay it down!! Relatively sparsely populated by today's standards but with an edge that belies their number, Sas and his 'chums' make it happen and keep it nicely real.
Short spoken intros help keep the music flowing so there's little or no respite from the electrifying blues onslaught. Sas' canny knack of keeping guitar solos shortish but pertinent is pleasantly inspired; oh yes, there's still some pretty aggressive and more evolving solos in there yet Sas never seems to get totally carried away with his axemanship - it's a well balanced and fluid yet totally ballsy display he puts on here. The 'band' offer well proportioned support and drive the Sas machine with true feeling and understanding. Everyone has their chance, everyone has their part to play in making this a scintillating album.
'Wandering Between Worlds' was recorded at the Boerderij, Zoetermeer in the Netherlands and Sas followers sure do get an outing to remember; Sas ducks and dives into Chicago blues, boogie and just about every other blues nuance you could name, he dips his musical toe into each of the sub-genre with equal confidence and similar feel for the way of that 'culture'. 'Wandering Between Worlds' by Julian Sas is like a tour through blues history but with a respectfully weighted contemporary twist. As value for money goes, it just don't get much better than this! As a blues experience, it's the mutt's nuts. Live electric blues at its finest. 'Wandering Between Worlds' by Julian Sas is a must-have package for any self-respecting lover of blues music - and, turn the bugger up loud and then just sit back to enjoy this at its dynamic and ballsy best - a crackin' album, great blues trip!
