Julia Harris

EP - Swansea Sessions

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Silence' @ 'CD quality'

Julia Harris was unknown to me until last Sunday evening when she opened up for Nick Harper at Worcester's Marr's Bar. Her set was so vibrant that I just had to get my itchy fingers on a recording; 'Swansea Sessions' was recorded in 2004 and will hopefully be followed by a new album very shortly.

Julia's approach to acoustic music is one of total attack. Her songs are lyrically excellent, she plays beautifully on the simplistic side and has a voice with such grit and power that she screams out to be listened to. This is a great, if short and maybe not totally typical of her current work, introduction to Julia's musical way. 'Swansea Sessions' with its four tracks clearly demonstrates this young lady's natural and exciting talent. Although the production here doesn't really show just how powerful and exciting her live work is, it's still a great piece of work. Julia's voice and style sits somewhere between Alanis Morissette and Melanie (for those old enough to remember). Her crystal clear voice lets you hear every single word and the songs are nicely uncluttered yet solidly structured.

'Silence', 'Leave', 'Wake Of Our Youth, and 'Ha-ha' make up this short work and 'Swansea Sessions' gives the listener just a brief but charming taste of Julia Harris. She's young, gifted, has a warm disposition and bubbly nature that'll be hard to capture in the studio. I eagerly look forward to her next release because I feel that Julia Harris has got something very special to offer. Her ebullient nature may never be truly captured through recording but her strong writing and gutsy voice will be sure to shine no matter what she does.
