'Start Point' is just so easy to listen to; there's nothing sharp, nothing obtuse, nothing to dislike - just loads of great 'chunes' to chill to and get into! Beckett scores on several fronts here - musically he keeps it relatively simple and uncluttered yet manages to make it all feel vibrant and 'alive' - lyrically this is clever although, interestingly enough, it doesn't seem to matter whether you actually listen to the words or not, this is more about the 'complete' thing and listening with your heart rather than just 'listening' per se. Having said that, Beckett's lyrics are actually extremely good - clever without being over-smart, homely without being self-indulgent. 'Start Point' is just excellent!!
'Start Point', and I assume the general musical output from Jonathan Beckett, is hard to pigeonhole; it aint retro although there are many influences from times gone by - it aint acoustic, although Beckett's feel is generally within that 'genre', it's much more - it aint pop, it aint rock, it aint experimental, but it is a bit alternative and it's certainly something special! The music of Jonathan Beckett really does have to be experienced to fully appreciate - Beckett quite obviously puts a great deal of effort into his music to make it so 'just so'! Comparisons would be futile - Jonathan Beckett is above all that; 'Start Point' is awesome - it's different, it's fresh, it's rewarding, it's amazing!
'Start Point' by the extremely talented Jonathan Beckett is a 'real' piece of work and Beckett demonstrates superb creativity, excellent musicianship and stunning, all-round professionalism. One to sit back and enjoy - one to ponder on - one to grow into, one to last - one in a million - brilliant!!
