Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Devil's Back Yard' @ 'CD quality'
Amor lays down this lazy sounding work in true Amor style; his guitar work provides a slow but reasonably jaunty backdrop to what is actually a great little song. Amor's distinctive vocal delivery is allowed to take pride of place here and hence the lyrics are much more accessible. The work has plenty of hooks in its armoury; if you don't get driven insane by the whistling the guitar line time and again, it'll be the vocal melody line that gets ya!
I've always thought of Jon Amor as being very much an album man - it's slightly weird to listen to him slickin' out on a single. Although I don't actually see 'The Devil's Back Yard' being a massive hit, I can definitely see it working amazingly well as a promotional tool for the album - providing his promotions people can get serious radio/TV time sorted out! Amor, of course, has a big following from his previous musical incarnations and many will, quite rightly, stay loyal which will certainly help the cause. Jon Amor needs to get his hooks into a whole new audience base and show the world just what he's got in his musical locker. 'The Devil's Back Yard' actually typifies the man's work; Amor is precision personified and always puts his whole self into his work. Hopefully, 'The Devil's Back Yard' will be the tool he needs to get out to a much wider, as yet un-Amor-challenged, audience.
'The Devil's Back Yard' is Jon Amor in a nutshell - it's certainly the more commercial side of this affable character and should allow him to earn his true place in musical history.
