John Otway

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 15/1/05

What a fantastic night this was!! Not known for his musical prowess John Otway blew away his audience tonight with a set of musical madness, off-his-head comedy and just pure in-yer-face, clowning entertainment!!

Supported by guitar virtuoso Richard Holgarth, Otway ripped through his set with an enthusiasm that was totally infectious. Starting with his 'big hits' Otway gambolled, frolicked, jumped off step-ladders and generally had a bloody good time doing what he does best - just being the extrovert John Otway. His followers enjoyed every last minute of it; the place was just a cacophony of weird songs and laughter and some pretty loud and impressive instrumental work. Personally, I've never laughed as much at any gig before, or at any other artist or at any other venue. This was just a bloody good night of fun and frivolity. Having said all that, Otway did actually perform at least two 'straight' songs - and damn good they were too!! Otway performed his unique act with a variety of guitars (weird!), theramin, percussion pads, his rare vocal style and most of all his presence - all ably driven along by Holgarth's electric (and sometimes electrifying!) guitars.

Otway and Holgarth bounced quips off each other, took the piss out of each other and winged their way through what was obviously a pre-meditated set that had the feel of a complete free-for-all.

The written word just cannot do this man justice; you've just got to see, hear and experience this guy!! Don't expect a set of great music - just hang on in, relax (that's not really possible though!) and enjoy this pure, maniac entertainment that John Otway does so well.

I'll be back - for sure!!
