Play 90 second soundbite of 'DTA (Don't Trust Anyone)' @ 'CD quality'
It's a relatively simplistic and short but catchy piece built on a loosely trip hop theme with Matson's gritty but easy vocals 'crying' out the lyrics.
Initially 'DTA' feels slightly retro - mainly because of the very electro back beat and keys. Yet, Matson's easy style is somehow very 'happening' and 'now'. And then the lyrics are slightly 'dark' compared to the 'bright' instrumentation; the trip hop instrumental elements get the feet tapping which feels somehow slightly surreal when set against the not so up-beat lyrics. But, these slightly contradictory comings together work pretty well actually; Certainly 'DTA' is very infectious but I'm not sure if it's got enough guts to really make a really big impression.
Joe Matson's chequered and varied musical career has clearly shaped his current style. Although I enjoyed 'DTA' I'm left a little unsure as to where it's all going to lead. I'm sure that Mr Matson understands better than I do! Perhaps Joe Matson's 'DTA' is just the start of a new generation of trip hop pop.
