Play 90 second soundbite of 'Where Is My Good Man' @ 'CD quality'
This album of fine blues music was recorded over thirty years ago and has never before been released in CD format. 'Do It' finds Kelly in superb form; this lady knew how to sing the blues and she was able to keep it real without the need to rely on the 'new' technology of the day - this is Jo Ann Kelly laid bare and beautiful - the real Jo Ann Kelly - no frills, no gimmicks, no embellishment. 'Do It' is blues delivered with respect for it's origins, its meaning and its cause - Kelly gives it with guts, feeling and true empathy, blues from the heart, to the heart!!
Coming on the back of the British blues explosion way back when, Kelly refused to be rushed into taking the new-fangled electric way that so many of her contemporary blues artists were experimenting with - no showy electric solos for this lady, no over-blown instrumentation to get the message across, just the message and no more! Yes, Kelly relied on her personalised and gritty delivery to carry the load. Kelly sounded like the real deal then and she still does thirty years later. Kelly delivers her blues in the style of the history-making female blues shouters at the early part of the twentieth century - real, hard-felt and believable blues, stripped back and genuine. 'Do It' totally reflects the trade-mark Jo Ann Kelly blues stylee and it's release is surely gonna create great interest amongst the true blues lovers of today.
We'll never know if Jo Ann Kelly would've eventually succumbed to commercial pressure and taken the over-worked and mis-representative electric route, had she lived longer. I somehow doubt it, Kelly was a blues musician through and through and her ability to deliver the goods with absolute 'truth' was brilliant. 'Do It' by Jo Ann Kelly then is a brilliant tribute to a quite exceptional latter-day blues musician. Whether giving it out with hints of country, gospel or soul, Jo Ann Kelly was always true to the genre and dedicated to spread the blues 'word' - 'Do It' looks at a typical period in Jo Ann Kelly's musical life and will be a splendid and worthy addition to the collection of any blues-minded lover of 'traditional' folk/blues music. Super stuff this - a must have album - a real treat!! So, listen and learn the blues, listen and feel the blues, listen and live the blues!
