Play 90 second soundbite of 'Inside Outside' @ 'CD quality'
Hickey's impassioned vocalisation brings total honesty to his gutsy songs; everything his sings about becomes real, believable! His songs are as varied as his delivery; if he's rockin', he's cool but vibrant and stops short of absolute rock preferring clearly to bow to indie commerciality rather than more cultish powerhouse rock - acoustically, Hickey tends towards the deep throaty sounds that fill space with great dynamics and make his songs gutsy whilst retaining the emotional element.
As a promotional work, 'Inside Outside' certainly shows this guy's strength and depth although perhaps not really focussing on any single aspect of his musical range and ability. But, the diversity displayed here is well proportioned and extremely informative. Hickey definitely knows his way around the modern musical form and he clearly demonstrates his instrumental, vocal and writing talents.
'Inside Outside' is a brave but massively competent release that tells the listener most of what he/she needs to know about the talented Jim Hickey. 'Inside Outside' features the throbbingly electric 'Inside Outside' and the catchy indie 'Telling The Truth' alongside the acoustic and beautifully rounded 'Way Home' and the slightly dark but jangly and emotional 'The End' - all-in-all an adventurous ride of elegant, well crafted modernistic soft-rock. Jim Hickey clearly has massive talent and this EP is a great introduction to his varied and expressive musical world.
