The legend that is Jim Capaldi came 'home' and brought with him his amazing blend of timeless music. Billed as an acoustic evening (well Jim did play acoustic guitar I suppose!), this was a megafest of classic music new and old.
Quality music from a great man who still obviously enjoys performing after all his years in the business. Supported by a great four piece band, Capaldi instantly had his audience on his side. Opening with the fairly upbeat 'Something So Strong' he had his audience where he wanted them - and held them for the entire evening with a great, polished set of quality songs.
We were wowed with brilliant reworkings of such classics as 'The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys', '40,000 Headmen' and 'Rock And Roll Stew'. Jim's voice seemed better than ever; strong with a gutsy, gravely quality but still with the feeling and passion of those heady 70's and 80's days. Playing acoustic guitar and percussion he showed us that he is still a great musical all-rounder. He encouraged as much audience participation as possible - his followers only too glad to help out. Great banter between songs with reminiscences of Worcester days made this feel like a family affair.
The standard of musicianship was as high as you could ever expect. There was that untenable edge that simply oozed quality and professionalism leaving those fortunate enough to be there knowing that they'd experienced something quite special. And, talking about special, we had a special guest in the audience tonight and it didn't take much cajoling to get him on stage, just a simple few words, "there's a spare guitar if you're interested". Jim then rearranged his scheduled set and introduced his old pal, another legend, Steve Winwood. (So glad I didn't miss this gig!!). 'Light Up Or Leave Me Alone' featured Mr.Winwood on guitar and support vocal. The number had a great spontaneous feel to it as the cigar smoking Winwood eased his way in looking totally at ease working with his old pal Capladi again. It turned into a bit of a jam and the audience went wild.
We were treated to just one encore, with Winwood - another free-form sounding piece, 'Elixir Of Life' which received a standing ovation from the sizeable crowd.
Unfortunately, that was it, it was over. However, tonights gig was certainly one to remember. And, what a coup for The Marr's Bar, Capaldi and Winwood!! It doesn't get much better.
