'Whatever Makes You Happy' by Jeff Lang is a work of blues based subtlety and commercial sensibility. Lang is a sensational guitarist but unlike many of his contemporaries Lang doesn't rely on his instrumental skills alone. The writer of poetic, story-telling lyrics, composer of haunting musical scores and the owner of silky smooth but expressive vocal chords, Lang is a genuine all-rounder with a clear knowledge of musical dynamics.

'Whatever Makes You Happy' is not yer normal, gut wrenchin' blues package. Sure, its packed with blues nuances and all the normal stories of hardship and missed opportunities etc but, there's much more to this genre-challenging album. Conservatively underpinned with hints of nu-country, embellished with contemporary folk, occasionally bolstered by subtle rockin' riffs and containing just enough commercial vision, 'Whatever Makes You Happy' should appeal to a wide-ranging audience base. Lang's music has a light, gentle feel; blues based maybe but it somehow leaves you feeling positive and optimistic and perhaps morethan a little enlightened.

Jeff Lang's songs remind me of a well proportioned coming together of the melodic and harmonic finery of Tim Finn, the emotional and heartfelt story-telling of Damien Rice and the dynamic acoustic vision of James Taylor all treated with the best, shades of delicate roots blues. The end result is massively compelling and enormously enjoyable.

Beautifully packaged and presented, Jeff Lang's 'Whatever Makes You Happy' is a superb album that demonstrates all that's good about modern, blues based roots music.
