Play 90 second soundbite of 'Blur' @ 'CD quality'
Originally from Boston but now playing out of Amsterdam, Jaya The Cat are a quite brilliant reggae/ska/punk/rock outfit and this album is just bloody great! Something just a little bit different. Something to get the juices flowin'. Something that you don't hear every day!
How many times have you listened to song lyrics and tried to work out what that song is actually about? How many times have you failed to work out what that song is about coz the lyrics have been laid down with 'poetic' licence? Well, that won't happen if you listen to 'More Late Night Transmissions With...' coz, cleverly, the lyrics are written and delivered almost conversationally - you don't have to think for yourself here coz Jaya The Cat make sure the words are totally accessible and totally clear. And, Jaya The Cat's music is all the better for that clarity!!
Like it or not, Jaya The Cat's individualistic take on one of the less popular genre nowadays is nothing short of inspired. Jaya The Cat sound like they've got a few things to say and they sure make sure you get their message - they aint preachin' and they aint teachin' - they are givin' it real straight arrow, up-front, no need for innuendo, no need for any play on words of any type, anywhere.. Jaya The Cat tell it like it is and what they have to say is driven by sensational music that's been properly thought out and professionally crafted - this is real quality boys and girls, proper stuff, the mutt's nuts!
Jaya The Cat are a five-piece comprising The Germ (drums, percussion), Geoff (vox, guitar, fx), Jordi 'Pockets' Nieuwenburg (lead Guitar), Jan Jaap Onverwagt (bass, keyboards) and Steven Brautigam (bass) - plus a few friends along the way. These guys make a joyous 'noise' and their punchy rockin' delivery of reggae/ska ditties is quite wondrous and extremely refreshing. Gritty, gravel-throated vocals sit clearly atop of the often raunchy instrumentation and everything's delivered with precision and real power. There's no clashing of dynamics, no confusion within the mix and certainly no doubt about Jaya The Cat's unified take on genre melding. These guys know how to keep it real and make it work - everything's beautifully balanced and superbly executed.
'More Late Night Transmissions With...' by Jaya The Cat is a seriously good album of finely crafted reggae-rock; don't knock it 'til you've tried it folks - these guys really make it work - superb fun, great entertainment, a brilliant outing that left me wanting more - loads more!!
