Play 90 second soundbite of 'Something In The Image' @ 'CD quality'
Well established as a writer of fine songs (look out Eagles, Glenn Frey and Johnny Rivers for examples of Tempchin's work) but now coming on big and strong as a recording artist in his own right, Jack Tempchin's 'Songs' is a sensational introduction to this extraordinary all-rounder. As poetically diverse as Cohen, as gritty and honest as Springsteen, a little bit of rock, a touch of country, occasional hints of 'pop' sensibility, some jazzy undercurrents - that's just some of what Jack Tempchin brings to your door!!
'Songs', first and foremost is a writer's album; the songs are varied but always strong, never over-wordy, they're concise and very much to the point. Tempchin doesn't waste space with word over-kill rather, he writes modernistic poetry which is then set thoughtfully to music. Next comes Tempchin as a vocalist; maybe not the greatest voice ever but, like Cohen, he knows how to put what he has to very good use. Tempchin's voice is slightly woody and very warm and is perfectly suited to his charming, evocative songs. Lastly there's Tempchin the musician; here he delivers guitar and harmonica, both with loving feel and again without delving into showy stuff. It all comes together quite beautifully and 'Songs' is an absolute pleasure to behold.
Now, although Tempchin can rock it up a bit I think he finds his level much better with his mournful ballads. It's the slower numbers that the timbre in the voice comes through and as I listen I can again hear Springsteen but, amazingly I'm also reminded of the late great Jim Reeves - that same silky, smooth sound that wins hearts as well as minds. Tempchin certainly knows how to emote through words and voice!!
'Songs' by Jack Tempchin is a beautifully navigated piece of nu-country Americana. I use the word 'navigated' descriptively coz Tempchin travels easily through genre on his 'Songs' journey - he twists and turns through many time signatures, he treads gently across several idiosyncrasies of the modern music form and he wanders effortlessly in and out of moods like he 'feels' every single emotion he's passing on. As I listen I can envisage Tempchin simply sitting on the stoop of his 'ranch', guitar in hand, singing to the stars just as easily as I can see him wowing big audiences on a fancy tour. Clever stuff - Tempchin is some 'musician' and 'Songs' is a real beaut!!
'Songs' by Jack Tempchin is poetic and musical heaven - Tempchin delivers his stunning songs with real empathy and near-tangible belief. 'Songs' could easily be broken down into ten stand-alone single releases - every one commercially viable, each beautifully suited to radio play, each a little gem in its own right - ten fantastic songs coming together to form one stunning album - 'Songs' by Jack Tempchin is absolutely superb!!
