Play 90 second soundbite of 'Empty Eyes' @ 'CD quality'
Mixing genre from every far-flung corner and melding it carefully into what I can only describe as industrial/electronica-punk/rock, History Of Guns have concocted what sounds like a winning formula. And, both tracks here are taken from the History Of Guns' new album 'Acedia' - and don't that bode well?? Sound like a 'must have' to me!!
For those old enough to remember, History of Guns remind me of something between The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown and Gary Numan; the former's zany rock driven inventiveness daubed liberally with the latter's visionary but commercial electro pop experimentation. For those too young to know the work of Brown and/or Numan....just zany rock driven inventiveness daubed liberally with visionary but commercial electro pop experimentation!! The end result is quite brilliant; sounding new, fresh and incredibly commercial, History Of Guns seem to be sticking two of their punkish fingers up at the 00's inane pop scene. Quite right too!! It's great to have someone making a big noise without actually conforming or even paying lip-service.
'Empty Eyes' opens with pounding 'percussion' and hefty chords which let in the gravely vocals and then all hell breaks loose and the track starts to become epic and anthemic sounding. Xalent track!! 'But I'll Be Waiting' is somewhat calmer (relatively speaking!!); a cleverly driven riff and 'windy' atmospherics combine to give the track a haunting vibe - and then those vocals come in again and...wow... more of the same I'm pleased to report. What a great double 'A' this is - I'm totally torn between the two songs; first I prefer one... then the other...they're both so damn good!!
Both tracks are great radio material and History Of Guns seem to have come up with a mighty fine recipe for rockin' success; 'Empty Eyes' and 'But I'll Be Waiting' should see the outfit moving on up a few rungs....and deservedly so!! Great stuff this...a brilliant buzz and a really cool vibe!!
