Play 90 second soundbite of 'Can't Make My Mind Up' @ 'CD quality'
Unashamedly citing Cliff & The Shadows, The Hollies and The Beatles as their earliest influences, Hidden In The Dark stay very much true to their origins by performing gentle and harmonious melodic pop that's naively retro but embellished with a few 00's guitar fx straight out of the Stephen Stills/Jorma Kaukonen songbooks. Hidden In The dark, in their quest to revitalise their beloved musical era of choice, remind me very much of the early 'West Coast', 'Summer Of Love' stylee that tended to pool together gentle lyrics, creative harmonies and simple but effective guitar riffs glistening with the limited effects available at the time. Hidden In The Dark are like a step back in time!
Hidden In The Dark's music is not, in any way, commercial at this time! What these guys do is very much a 'cultish' thing that'll appeal to the older 'hippies' and 'loved-up' freaks from way back when. Now that's not a criticism, Hidden In The Dark should be allowed to play whatever they wish but in going down this route they will certainly limit their audience base. And, I admire their tenacity and perhaps temerity in sticking in their 'comfort zone' coz music is not always about cheap-throw-away-pop and commerciality, it's also about creativity, sensitivity and being true to ones self and that's just about where Hidden In The Dark are at!!
Ok, so, Hidden In The Dark aren't like most outfits out there - and that's the truth! Hidden In The dark are doing their own thing, at their own pace and in their own way! These guys have survived through countless global musical shake-ups, they've watched all the 'five minute wonders' come and quickly go, and through it all, Hidden In The dark have stuck to their combined guns and gone against the flow with honesty and plenty of guts - here they are in 2008, playing music that could've come out of the festival scene of '67/'68 and they're standing proud and unabashed and deserving of some sympathy and understanding - long live bands like Hidden In The dark, long may we be entertained by musicians that believe what they do and long may they continue to provide good, honest musical entertainment. This eight track demo is a nice compilation of softly rockin' songs from another era - it's as pleasant as it surprising and as entertaining as you let it be!!
