CD - He's Just Not That Into You - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Play 90 second soundbite of 'I'd Like To' by Corinne Bailey Rae @ 'CD quality'

I think this is the first time I've been asked to review a movie soundtrack! And, unfortunately, soundtracks just aint my particular thing; they aint exactly compilations, they aint samplers, they're exactly what they say on the cover, soundtracks!! From mere snippets of meaningful, moody music within a film you're given the chance of having every track whole and as originally recorded - but without the film's guidelines I don't see how the songs come together to form a meaningful album that can be enjoyed without the visual stimulus and emotional content.

So, 'He's Just Not That Into You' is typically a wide-ranging, unconnected collection of songs from across the ages, from the last thirty years or so in this case. From The Human League to The Ting Tings, from The Cure to Maroon 5, from Talking Heads to Corinne Bailey Raeand much more - an eclectic, pretty exotic list of artists with indeed some really great songs. But, what exactly is the marketplace for these works? Surely it's really only real, stalwart film fanatics that put their hard earned cash on the line to purchase such works! It's a bit of a niche market isn't it? But, they do sell so I guess they also work on some level.

'He's Just Not That Into you' certainly runs the gamut of popular music across the years; the music is great but it's only relevant to moments in time from a film and in that 'place' the songs are evocative, descriptive and, of course, timely. As a collection of songs on an album I find it all a little disconnected and meaningless. However, those that love the film will find much more here than I ever will; memories, moments, snatches of film sequences that perhaps stick in the mind for one reason or another. And, that's great for the 'few' but as a general release, just like any other film soundtrack, not for the masses. And certainly not at this time of recession!

So, 'He's Just Not That Into You' is a just and worthy release within the realms of movie soundtracks - of course it is, it works exactly as it's supposed to! The range and style of songs here is pretty amazing and there's loads to enjoy on an individual basis but as a collective I find it, as with most soundtracks, just uninteresting and somewhat unnecessary! As a general album release it's value and worth will be somewhat curtailed and restricted. Great music doubtless but, maybe not a massive hit in the true sense. Soundtrack album, all fine and dandy - special work, not really! 'He's Just Not That Into You' will find its takers and it will be enjoyed by anyone from that small circle of music buyers that's into movie soundtracks for simply what they are.
