Heather Greene

Single - Always Something

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Always Something' @ 'CD quality'

Heather Greene wasn't at all what I expected. This new single, 'Always Something', is unlike anything else I can think of that's currently doing the rounds. Greene not only has a pretty unusual voice but the way she delivers her vocals is also memorably unique - think Kate Bush meets Mary Margaret O'Hara. No, she doesn't sound like either but Heather Greene does similarly unusual vocal acrobatics and plays with sound and vocal texture as she pours out her wonderfully poetic lyrics within her sensitively constructed 'scores'.

Greene, judging from the three tracks here, is an unpredictable free-spirit when it comes to making music and she certainly defies categorisation. Her songs are hauntingly touching without ever being too dark and they just sort of creep up on you without you actually realising it. She sings with great sensitivity and is pleasantly different to most other female artists out there at the moment.

'Always Something' is a strangely strange but oddly normal song that has R&B tendencies and hints of reggae yet it's actually neither of those! Initially, it comes across as slightly off-the-wall but after a couple of listens it starts to really get at yer - and then you just know you've been got!. 'Let It Slide' is a real slow worker of a song; beautifully poised, gentle and compelling it simply draws you in and holds you there, somewhere warm and comfortable - a nice place to be. 'The Moon Hangs Fire' continues the sensitive theme; it's another beautifully handled and absorbing work that gets pleasantly under your skin without you knowing it and leaves you nicely tingling.

Heather Greene definitely has a way about her - she writes fine songs and has a very subtle but accessible way of getting her words and music across. One to watch out for maybe! Methinksso!
