Play 90 second soundbite of 'Balance Of Power' @ 'CD quality'
'Balance Of Power' is a cleverly worked song that fits no particular pigeonhole other than 'good old British melodic rock'. With lots going on instrumentally there's plenty to get your teeth into as Grief Society 'grind' out a catchy groove that quickly comes to you and gets under your skin. Melodic and catchy, 'Balance Of Power' has a sort of worldly-wise quality to it; these guys really do sound like they know what they're doin'!
Grief Society appear to write with a well practiced commerciality but strangely and by way of contradiction, don't sound like anything else around at the minute. They play with an obvious unity and solidity that only comes with time and hard gigging. Vocally there's a soulful quality that sits snugly within the rock machine instrumentation. As an early introduction to the new album 'Balance Of Power' sounds like a pretty canny choice - even as I listen and write, 'Balance Of Power' is really starting to 'stick' with me.
Grief Society aren't 'new kids on the block' and 'Balance Of Power' shows well seasoned musical maturity. A damn good taster for the album which is nearing completion.
