Play 90 second soundbite of 'Forty & Tight' by Cy Laurie Jazz Band
@ 'CD quality'
'Great British Jazz' lets us 'moderners' have a looksee and listen into the very basic recordings of a golden era that helped change the whole music industry in Britain. Not 'basic' musically, 'basic' only in a studio sense; compared to today's wealth of equipment and expertise, these 'guys' had so little to help them, thus the recordings are just about as honest as it gets - genuine outpourings that catch the moment and the mood of the day - reality as we rarely ever see or hear it nowadays!!
It matters not whether you've ever heard of some of these bands, it only really matters what's being laid down for the brave new musical world of the time. These bands had to fight to get the recognition they deserved - not fight the music listening public but fight the system, fight the broadcasters, the censors, the establishment. Thankfully, many won through and were able to bring Britain one step closer to becoming an understanding and open musical nation. 'From small acorns big oak trees grow', and the same applies to the jazz movement of the post-war '50's - musically, and from a point of view of freedom to express within a musical form we owe a great deal to the people and bands featured here. Very worthy, very just and very listenable!!
