Pretty hard rockin' stuff this from a band that seems to have picked up a reasonable following very quickly. They play a sort of highly charged blend of rock/pop/punk. Accomplished instrumentally and more than adequate vocally, Girls Love Ponies took The Marr's Bar by the seat of its pants and rocked through a shortish but entertaining set.
Comprising Lee Chance - vocals/guitar, Kriss White - vocals/bass, Richard Eacock - drums and Chris Darby - guitar these guys first got a feel of The Marr's Bar stage during a Wednesday Jamming Night. Most of their material's band penned but they do fall back on a couple of covers now and again. Their sound is somewhere in the Nirvana/Foo Fighters mould but perhaps a little more controlled and main stream.
There's no doubt that they've the talent to pull off their chosen genre but for me they haven't yet put their own stamp and tag on it. There's too many bands that they sound like. They haven't quite found an identity of their own. That said, they were still very impressive with an energetic set that generally went down well with the smallish audience. I particularly like their use of vocal harmony that at least brought about a little respite from the in-yer-face style normally associated with this type of music. In fact, bass man Kriss has a very good voice in own right as shown when he occasionally took the lead.
They 'punched and kicked' their way through their set with attitude and hard work. Their followers seemed to love it all. There was even a bit of light hearted stuff as we were treated to a few moments of GLP meets Steps with a few 'slick' synchronised moves.
The certainly enjoyed themselves up there and they gave a bloody good account of themselves. Based on what I saw tonight, Girls Love Ponies'll get plenty of work. They'll pick up fans on the way but again I'd like to see them find that little something that'll set them apart from their contemporaries.
