Play 90 second soundbite of 'Cunning Stunts' @ 'CD quality'
'A' side 'Cunning Stunts' is an up-tempo rocker that pretty much defies categorisation. opening with a tasty, almost incessant guitar riff that carries you somewhere you've been trying to reach but never quite made it, it's a flyer of a track. Genuinely commercial whilst leaping in and out of genre boundaries it drills its way through you and cauterises flesh as it burrows. Short but sweet, 'Cunning Stunts' hits hard and fast and sticks with you for ages after its ended. 'B' side, 'A Kind Of Existence' is something else altogether. Breathing dark, almost sinister soundscapes from the speakers it haunts as it evolves. Going totally in different directions to its fellow track, 'A Kind Of Existence' demonstrates just how diverse Gabrielles Wish can be. In fact, as a pairing I don't think I've ever heard two so dissimilar tracks from one band before. It's really quite extraordinary.
So, 'Cunning Stunts' and 'A Kind Of Existence' tell the listener something about Gabrielles Wish but so far removed from each other as they are, the release overall brings about more questions that it actually answers. There's no doubting that Gabrielles Wish are doing something different. But, exactly what it is they're doing I'm not too sure! Modern-day enigma variations perhaps!
'Cunning Stunts' / 'A Kind Of Existence' is pretty hot and methinks that Gabrielles Wish have something very different going on. Time will tell and perhaps we'll only really find out what Gabrielles Wish are all about when they put together an album of their distinctly diverse material. Or, I suppose there's always live gigs - I wonder what they get up to - the mind boggles!
