Future Native

Single - Dangerous

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Dangerous' @ 'CD quality'

Australian outfit, Future Native, revolve around PJ and Melanie Creamer. 'Dangerous', their latest single release (here with 'Time Will Be Good' and 'Dreaming'), is a beautifully melodic work somewhat a la early Turin Brakes. Taken from their new album, 'The Politics Of Love', it opens with elegant acoustic guitar reminiscent of James Taylor's work. 'Dangerous' is a curious mixture of contemporary folk, catchy pop and dark ballad. The overall feel is one of cleverly commercial writing whilst retaining a very individualistic sound. The smooth voice of P J Creamer is further complemented by superb harmonies from Melanie and others. The voices ride over a catchy groove as the effortless guitar is picked out amidst precise accompaniment. It's a great song but maybe somehow lacking a real killer punch - as the lyrics tell of a 'dangerous woman' it's almost too smooth to be believable.

As the three tracks progress I realise that 'Dangerous' is erring on the commercial side of Future Native's work. 'Time Will Be Good' moves more towards the folk genre with its lilting violin giving a Celtic feel to a clever, moody piece. 'Dreaming' opens quietly with mandolin then slides almost seamlessly into an altogether different stylee with catchy chorus', keys, harp and harmonies - instrumentally a sort of modern day Stealers Wheel if you will!

Future Native's biog tells of touring with some pretty impressive outfits and I'm sure that they will have made an impression during those times. For me Future Native just lack a little bit of ooomph to stand them apart. Their music is almost too nice really - good but maybe just too inoffensive to make immediate impact!
