Play 90 second soundbite of 'Summer Long' @ 'CD quality'
What a debut! 'Summer Long' is fast and catchy and just makes you feel good no matter how many times you hear it. Free State Prophets seem to have found a superb formula that works for them coz it don't stop with 'Summer Long'! Oh no, there's two more fantastic tracks here as well, 'More Or Less' and 'Nightlight' - just great value, brilliant popability, very commercial and simply great songs. The former, 'More Or Less', has a slightly nu-country but contradictory retro feel to it, jaunty and rather early Byrds-esque in nature it's a real stunner and I love it! 'Nightlight' doesn't let the side down for one second; a slow and more moody work, it's handled superbly and is a real grower.
I'm not too hot on 'pop' songs as a rule but 'Summer Long' and both of its 'B' sides by Free State Prophets is an absolutely stunning debut single - any one of the tracks could take the lead role and any one could easily become one of those timeless classics - a bit like The Turtles' 'Happy Together', when you hear it you can't help but think 'what a great song - I sure wish I'd written it!'. Watch out for Free State Prophets - these guys have got it absolutely right!! Great band, great songs, fantastic single!!
