Play 90 second soundbite of 'Dead Star' @ 'CD quality'
this Evesham quad blast through their five track demo with stunning control whilst still generating all the power, aggression and 'thrash' needed to qualify for the genre without loosing the, all important, edge!
Freekilos just stop short of total, fucked-up mayhem; they handle themselves with stylish fire in their belly's, they take it just far enough but never over-step the threshold of acceptability. Freekilos have put together an impressive demo here; I can actually understand every word that's being delivered which, I believe, is important; why bother to write lyrics if you're not gonna let your audience hear and understand them?? Freekilos get it absolutely right, they've nailed it! Actually, I'm impressed with every aspect of Freekilos' work; they haven't let their penchant for 'thrash' cloud their vision or judgement at all - every instrument here, every note is distinctive and separated, every component part is an obvious and essential piece of the whole assembly - Freekilos have proportioned and balanced it all beautifully. And, is there really only one guitarist here - sounds pretty big to me!! The kick-ass tight rhythm section of G (bass) and Mark (drums) lay down some pretty hefty and solid foundations for that single guitar (Chris) to build on and embellish. Singist James hollers and wails out his impassioned words from somewhere deep within the cavernous electric surroundings - a great mass of well separated head-bangin' sound ensues. Great use of stops and tempo changes add interest and depth to the already super-charged but beautifully controlled wall of sound - sifted, sorted and well solid!
Freekilos are a monstrous sounding band and sure make a scary big 'noise' but, these dudes have exercised their right to be individual within the genre, they've chosen to hold back, to show restraint. I applaud that choice and firmly believe it to be the right choice. Freekilos stand apart from most of their 'thrash' contemporaries because of their common-sense approach - they'll appeal to a much wider audience on the back of their sensibility. Chunky, ballsy stuff this from Freekilos, well heavy but equally well balanced! It's right on the money!
