Play 90 second soundbite of 'Knives' @ 'CD quality'
Imagine Fairport Convention joining forces with Jethro Tull and early Marillion, add in some robust Richard Thompson-esque 'traditional' vibes, then bring the whole thing into the twenty-first century and you'll be just starting to understand what Finding Calcutta are trying to do here. 'Fearful Symmetry' is actually quite low-key in feel - it's a pleasant, softly-cushioned cruise rather than being a bumpy and uncomfortable rollercoaster ride. Ok, the 'progressive' side of Finding Calcutta means that often the lyrics can tend to be a little pretentious or contrived but that works just fine here; Finding Calcutta get the mix just about right and keep it pretty 'real'!
'Fearful Symmetry' by Finding Calcutta is a great way of discovering a very tasty outfit that're trying to offer something fresh and rewarding. Finding Calcutta have done a damn fine job with this four tracker - they 'weave' the instrumentation together quite beautifully and the overall feel is relaxed and very easy on the ear. They utilise their combined wealth of acoustic musicality extremely well and 'Fearful Symmetry' demonstrates their prog/folk/rock nuances to great effect.
Quite whether Finding Calcutta will manage to establish themselves in the fickle and hard-nosed musical arena is really down to you guys out there. Finding Calcutta have all the right component parts within their collective musical machinery and what they're gonna need now is to make the right connections to take their really impressive folk-rock onwards and upwards. I really enjoyed 'Fearful Symmetry' by Finding Calcutta - I'd like to think that this is just the start of much bigger things to come from this astutely aware and very competent outfit.
