Play 90 second soundbite of 'Rip Off' @ 'CD quality'
The album kicks off kinda furious with 'Find A Way'; it's a fairly typical Ivison work - full on rockin' stuff that gives a good indication of Fever's abilities and tightness. The very slightly slower, almost swampy 'Realise' follows. It's got some nice moody organ work propping up the main rhythm - a little worker this one. 'All I Can Think Of' takes it down real slow. A moody, thoughtful work with a really nice guitar refrain. A grower this one I think.
And so the theme goes on; light and shade, plenty of interest, some very impressive songs that give some indication of what The Fever are capable of. To pick out just one more track, 'Here In The Middle' is another fine slow, moody piece that again features some great keyboard stuff that reminds me just a little of early Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dirty swampy stuff that slowly builds to finish with a great riff. Not too much more to say really apart from that there are ten tracks here, (actually eleven cuz there's an unlisted and brilliantly atmospheric instrumental bonus track about ten minutes into track ten), each one just different enough to keep the interest high. On first hearing, I have to admit, I wasn't that impressed! I just didn't think it was going to do it for me. But, often that's not a bad thing. After all, this aint no 'pop' music, this should take a little longer to establish itself into the groove banks of the grey matter! And, what d'ya know, second and third hearings have got me into the groove. I now really like what's goin' on!!
This album goes some way to let you into the world of The Fever. But, as is often the case, it lacks the dynamics that Fever bring to a live gig. Nonetheless, a very moreish work that I'll be spending some more time with yet. Overall, a very good first release from this talented bunch. If you liked Seymour you'll surely like The Fever - even more!!
