Edwin Avenue

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 25/5/01

Sally Haines  Rowen Spence  Andre Ingenthron  Phil Basterfield

Edwin Avenue never seem to play long enough for my liking. Their musical style is somewhere in the jazz/funk mould but a little more laid back. The band describe it themselves as 'an original fusion of earthy soulful funk'.

Edwin Avenue

Singer, Sally Haines, has a nice smooth jazzy style with a lot of power. She's quite animated as she sings and she really seems to enjoy and feel the lyrics of their original songs penned by herself and guitarist, Phil. Sally's voice itself perfectly fits the 'earthy' description!

There's some fine (6 string!) bass playing by Andre Ingenthron, some really soulful, yet funky, guitar by Phil Basterfield, all driven on by the excellent drumming of Rowen Spence.

Formed in 1995, in Kidderminster, the band have had several radio slots and focus on playing music venues that are recognised as supporting up and coming acts. The current line up has been together since 1999.

As I mentioned before, although individually their songs are quite long, the overall set is often too short. Just when you're getting into it, it's over. Oh well, there's always next time!
