Play 90 second soundbite of 'Ugly Duck' @ 'CD quality'
This exciting eponymously titled EP showcases, with distinction, what Dr Slaggleberry are about. What they describe as 'Rock / Progressive / Metal' is far more than that; with spiky, staccato guitars straight out of the John McLaughlin book of 'contemporary jazz/rock guitar riffs' and a rhythm section that's equally disjointed (in the most positive and apt of ways) and just as eccentric, Dr Slaggleberry blast through this set of four great 'chunes'. Dr Slaggleberry's main homage to metal comes through the screamin', wailin' vocals that succinctly punctuate rather than take the lead. All-in-all, Dr Slaggleberry are pushing several musical boundaries here and doin' it damn well!!
Ok, Dr Slaggleberry are not gonna be to everyone's liking; metal-heads and rock-fiends will find plenty to admire and head-band along to but equally some will find Dr Slaggleberry a step too far. Contemporary jazz experimentalists will find loads to like but may just be put off somewhat by the vocal histrionics. Dr Slaggleberry are gonna make a few waves with their brash and bold take on modern jazz-rock; they defy most convention as they perform their complex and exciting experimental wares - Dr Slaggleberry certainly rock and Dr Slaggleberry definitely challenge!!
Dr Slaggleberry are unconventional enough to raise a few eyebrows and yet what they're doing is refreshingly, at times irritatingly, interesting. DR Slaggleberry take risks coz they may just upset the more traditionalists in the metal, rock or jazz arenas - hey, that's cool - bring it on I say - let's do the unthinkable, the extraordinary, let's toy with compositional normality and musical acceptability!! I like what Dr Slaggleberry are doin' - I enjoy the challenge - I love their energy - I admire their balls!! Really interesting and rewarding stuff this - keep it coming!!
