Delta Mainline

The Beautiful Sunshine EP

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Beautiful Sunshine' @ 'CD quality'

Fancy a bit of light rock psychedelia? Well, Delta Mainline might just have what you want. This four track EP, 'The Beautiful Sunshine' brings the experimental feel of the early 70's, a taste of pop/rock 90's and a bit chunk of 00's retro innovation (if that's not too much of a contradiction!). Delta Mainline dish out sleepy rock vibes that remind me of mid-period Pink Floyd meets The Verve. They've carefully assembled an excellent piece of work here that is beautifully descriptive and massively listenable; a seriously haunting piece of work that can chill and sooth simultaneously - the title track, 'Beautiful Sunshine', particularly.

As track two unfolds I am reminded of very early Hawkwind, before they went of into the 'Silver Machine' stylee; the track is built very much in that mould; deceptively simplistic riffs run there course alongside a restrained barrage of electronics and wind instruments. The whole thing has an interestingly naive feel to it and yet naive it isn't.

And so the theme continues throughout the two remaining tracks, 'Dandelion Girl' and 'Too Close To The Sun'. Delta Mainline's approach to their vocal work is interesting in so far as they tend to mix the voices a good way down into the instrumental mix; a point that makes the songs feel unusual and slightly risky. But, I feel that these dudes know what they're doing; they seem to be generating a soundscape that never becomes reliant on the main voice; there's is a slightly different take on modern rock psychedelia - and it really works.

'The Beautiful Sunshine' is a brave and innovative release. It's the sort of thing that you could just chill out to whilst taking in the warmth of our current heatwave in England. Just sit back and soak up the rays and let the melodic soft rock of Delta mainline wash over you. It'll feel like you're somewhere else entirely. Nice one!!
