Play 90 second soundbite of 'I Love You More Than I Hate Myself' @ 'CD quality'
Wilde may not be from the Delta and she certainly hasn't picked cotton in the fields but, this sassy young thing from Brighton seems well blessed in the soulful blues voice department and her songs sound like they come from the heart. Initially, I thought Wilde came up a bit short but the more I hear the more I get it all - Dani Wilde truly deserves this chance and I know she's already wowed a good number of like-minded musicians wherever she's been seen or heard. And rightly so, there's definitely some guts goin' on here! Wilde's voice may be on the soulful side of blue but she certainly has blues in her deft little fingers as demonstrated by some pretty impressive guitar work.
For me, Wilde currently excels in the slow blues department, 'In The Mood', 'I'm Going Down' and 'People Like You' being good examples here of her fine vocal qualities and she shows she can emote and express with the best of 'em. However, there's nowt wrong with her up-tempo work as clearly demonstrated on tracks like 'Bring Your Loving Home', 'I Want Your Loving' and 'Come Undone'. And hey, Wilde is no slouch on the guitar either and although there's some great axe work here she doesn't ever seem to take things too far - showing impressive virtuosity but at the same time impressive restraint. However, when she needs to let loose she certainly can! Dani Wilde doesn't seem to lack confidence in any aspect of her craft and her self-belief only strengthens her performance and likeability.
I'm drawn to Dani Wilde's blues style; she's refreshingly different and sounds like a real exciting prospect. Wilde doesn't pretend to be something she's not - she just gives it good and hard and comes up with the goods, seemingly, without effort. She is what she is! But, above all, she's good!!
Even though 'Heal My Blues' by Dani Wilde is a great debut work, it leaves me with the belief that there's an awful lot more still to come as this gritty young bluester grows in age, experience and skill - it's a hard road out there for female blues artists but if anyone's got the potential to make it work it's gotta be Dani Wilde. 'Heal My Blues' is a sound, slow worker and grower; as it unfolds so it evolves - its contagious vibe creeps up on you and before too long you're looking for the 'play' button once again...and again!
