Play 90 second soundbite of 'I Know Who I Am' @ 'CD quality'
The guy's got versatility and adaptability and this four track 'radio sampler' is a great introduction to this seemingly boundless artist.
'Songs From A Previous Existence' is generally a pretty gentle but persuasive EP that demonstrates Parry's abilities with the pen, the guitar and the voice; his is a mature take on what I suppose is the lighter side of blues rock. Parry's songs are somehow vibrant even when mournful, he colours his songs with beautifully proportioned guitars, strings and keyboards and he adds depth with his believable vocal delivery - I'm sure Parry feels every moment of his songs and that honesty only makes the songs even more accessible.
Blues balladeer is, I suppose, what Cy Parry really is - blues ballads cum mature pop is what his music is about; his songs are definitely on the moody side of things and his voice with its beautifully dark timbre certainly fits the bill on that score. Wonderful use of minimalist instrumentation offers great balance and facilitates audio clarity; Parry's arrangements are punctuative and empathetic rather than over-blown and confusing - nice work indeed!
There's something very homely and warm about Cy Parry's music - it's not actually massively adventurous, rather relying on well tried and tested formulae to get the most out of every composition without having to fall back on the absolutely obvious. Parry certainly knows how to bring his songs alive, he seems to be very much his own man, he knows what he wants and he knows how to make the most of his stylish talents.
'Songs From A Previous Existence' by Cy Parry is a really beautiful offering; Parry's relaxed style is easy on the ear and his songs are descriptive, tangible and meaningful - 'Songs From A Previous Existence', the EP, suggests that the larger collection in the form of the album will be something quite special!
