Play 90 second soundbite of 'Strange Part Of The Country' @ 'CD quality'
The Conil style is hard to pigeonhole but, I can hear a little bit of Tom Wait in the earthy voice and a definitely some John Martyn in the slightly jazz/rock instrumental feel. Comparisons aside, Conil have something quite special, unique almost; this single release, 'Strange Part Of The Country' is stunning on its own but here we have two further, equally impressive, works in the somewhat rockin' 'Dog Meat Stew' and the hauntingly beautiful 'Years Between' which show us more of the same gritty treatment given to equally impressive and 'important' tracks. Conil show here that they're an awesome band and Conil himself is a writer of great merit and, combined with his band, has all the tools to embellish his musical poetry with superbly composed, similarly darkly earthy backdrops - superb!!
It's good to hear an outfit actually getting away from the more sickly-sweet and lighter kinda stuff that's been doin' the rounds for the last couple of years; Conil show they're not afraid to break the mould and go it alone with their own brand of musical narrative from the pen of the lead man. 'Strange Part Of The Country' is stunning in its own right and I'd like to think that Conil could actually break through and bring the fickle music buying public something more gritty and real for a change. Commercially 'Strange Part Of The Country', unfortunately, probably won't make a massive impression or certainly not as big as I'd like to see it - Conil have more the feel of a cult outfit that should do extremely well, particularly in the albums marketplace.
'Strange Part Of The Country' by Conil is excellent - I only wish the public at large would show a bit more flexibility in their music of choice and help make Conil the sort of successful recording act I believe they should be. Great stuff this - I absolutely love it!!
