Play 90 second soundbite of 'A Way Of Being Free' @ 'CD quality'
To make comparisons is probably not really fair but so many people want to know 'who do they sound like?'. Well, they sound like The Composers. They have been likened to Divine Comedy - but although I can just about see it I don't totally agree. Certainly there's a little of Pulp in there - mainly in the rather unique arrangements and experimentation with the introduction of cleverly worked brass passages.
The Composers are five in total but sound bigger. The overall sound is quite intriguing. They seem to have melded together contemporary lo-fi indie-pop with tasty jazz vibes and punchy horns. Their songs are extremely melodic yet simplistic sounding but at the same time the arrangements are complex and maturely crafted. I like what The Composers are doing. Their songs have a very catchy element to them. The very British feel carries right through the three tracks, 'A Way Of Being Free', 'Evacuate London Town' and 'The Vein Jane Blues'; lyrically they're all excellent and I can't fault anything in their performance. The enhanced single brings with it a video of the title track which goes some way to letting you into the slightly odd-ball world of The Composers - a great package!!
As I listen and write I find myself drawn further into The Composers world. This really is a superb piece of work that's great but made even better by the fact that it's so bloody different. 'A Way Of Being Free' is in itself a charming piece of modern genius. The Composers have managed to come up with a totally individual style that's bright and absorbing. Personally, I can't wait to hear more from The Composers - I hope there's an album on the way - I want it!!
