Preamble : Gus Black is a man who first attracted attention in Europe in 2004. In the USA, the Los Angeles-born musician had already released two LPs under his first name which helped to secure him support slots for Oasis and Pearl Jam, among others. On this side of the Atlantic, Gus made his mark playing support for Elbow, Stephan Eicher, Runrig and Paul Weller before finally embarking on his first tour of Europe in his own right.
A worthy successor to "Uncivilized Love", his latest album (recently reviewed by Toxic Pete) represents an evolutionary step in Gus Black's artistic development. The intensity which was only hinted at on "Uncivilised Love" is unleashed with a vengeance here.
"It was wonderful to work with Wally Gagel", explains Gus. "But this was a different record, and I wanted to approach it differently." There were no changes to his choice of musicians, however: "I've been playing with them for around five years, now. It's great to be able to sit back and watch people you really trust contributing their own ideas to the sound and helping it to grow."
Look out for live dates around the UK at the end of Sept. 'Certain Kind of Light' is the forthcoming single and is released on Sept 25th. The album is out Oct 2nd.
