Play 90 second soundbite of 'Pivel Cuts' @ 'CD quality'
'Pixel Cuts' takes us through a serene dreamscape of synthesized sounds which conjure images of clear skies and warm, slowly flowing blue waters passing through canyons that softly echo every move. Superbly subtle use of the bass guitar adds a pulse-like quality as if one can hear ones own heart lazily throbbing as you relax into the aural surroundings. '140hz' brings the body and mind back from the trance induced state brought on by the opener. Funky jazz bass lays down the rhythm and everything else falls into line behind to create a sumptuous and foot tapping work. Clever use of samples enhances the electric trip. As it creeps in, 'Motif' is a haunting little piece that evolves slowly and smoothly to introduce picked, slapped and strummed bass lines that combine with frantic percussive patterns before gently fading back to its haunting beginnings. 'Extra Evidential' is short but beautifully handled; delicate, and sensitive it makes me feel as if I'm afloat and drifting off somewhere but not caring because I still feel safe and I know that Ciaxa will take me home.
Ciaxa is somewhat specialist stuff. The careful coming together of laid back jazz roots with funky edges and subtle mind-altering electronica will appeal to many but be just too challenging for others. It works for me and as an opening gambit for more of the same I find it compelling and adventurous.
