Captain Wilberforce

CD - Mindfilming

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Singer Wanted, Preferably Dead' @ 'CD quality'

Ah-ha, at last a new offering from Simon Bristoll and Daz Battersby's stylish Captain Wilberforce. The refreshingly lively yet often mellow 'Mindfilming' follows the excellent demo 'Dreams Of Educated Fleas' in its original approach and styling. 'Mindfilming' however is a class above its predecessor in its overall finish. It's a better handled recording, much smoother and seemingly faultless. Although marketed as a mini-album I'd be inclined to drop the 'mini' 'cause there's ten excellent tracks on this little beauty (even though it's less than thirty-five minutes long).

'Mindfilming' fairly belts along with a variety of original sounds and feels. Bristoll has once again managed to tie together some eerily unusual but very classy, commercially viable sounding material. There's definitely some very modern Beatlesesque vibes underpinning a lot of Bristoll's beautifully off-the-wall writing. And, to cap it all, the final track 'After Her' sounds and feels like it's come straight from the pen of the legendary Brian Wilson - it's that good!! Having a Beatles and Brian Wilson thing going on isn't a problem of course. In fact I think it speaks mountains about his great writing abilities!! As the tracks unfold I realise just how good Captain Wilberforce are, can be and I'm sure will be.

'Mindfilming' comprises ten shortish but punchy, contemporary works of great quality. Full of catchy 'hooks' that give instant appeal. Crammed with superb and varied vocal work that so typifies Simon Bristoll these new works are every bit as good as I'd expected them to be. The running order has been well thought out and maintains interest throughout. Bristoll's writing has, for me, improved drastically; great before but now very impressive indeed! His arrangements are at times breathtaking and totally absorbing. Lyrically Bristoll's work goes from strength to strength. Musically he's getting to be ahead of the field. Imaginatively he's a head-on, fully-paid-up, originality maestro.

Yes, I like 'Mindfilming' - it's frighteningly good - it's an awesome piece of intelligent 'pop'. Although it has instant appeal it cleverly carries with it a great depth and workman-like quality that drags the listener right in and cries out to be listened to over and over. 'Mindfilming' is just superb!! Get it!!!
