Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Revolution Will Come' @ 'CD quality'
Caplyn lay down their work with a very punchy, full-on attitude; think of the melodic edge of REM mixed with the balls of The Levellers and you start to get the picture. Heavily riff-laden songs full of passion, attitude and energy scream from the speakers from start to finish. There's a couple of stand-out tracks, most notably the superb 'The Revolution Will Come' which definitely errs on The Levellers side of commentary and guts - a very impressive piece of work it positively jumps out and smacks you in the face! It's commercial whilst holding onto the ethic of top quality song writing without totally and obviously selling out to the masses. Likewise, 'Shadowesque' leaps out with its catchy and memorable riff running behind excellent vocal work. The rhythm section drives along with precision and verve to make this another stand-out piece.
'Shine On' and 'Give As Good As You Get' continue the high spec works and just don't let the listener sit still for a single moment; both are punchy, raucous, energetic, high class works. 'My Desert Mind' climaxes the EP with another hint of The Levellers with contemporary blues undertones. It's a great track to finish on as it leaves the listener wanting more.
'Underdogs' times out at just under twenty minutes - almost one third of an hour of quality, modern, rock oriented, passionate songs played with an energy and proficiency that'll help Caplyn on their way to becoming a force to be reckoned with.
With 'Underdogs', Caplyn have laid down an excellent piece of contemporary rock. Instantly appealing songs written from the heart are carefully crafted and recorded resulting in a massively impressive and commercial work. The chosen title, 'Underdogs', suggests that Caplyn feel as though they feel they're still behind the pack - 'Underdogs' the EP suggests to me that Caplyn aren't far from leading the pack from the front. A great introduction!!
