Capital C

Single - Too Sweet For Rock And Roll

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Too Sweet For Rock And Roll' @ 'CD quality'

The clue's in the title! Australian, Capital C gives us a charming yet strange amalgamation of old and new with 'Too Sweet For Rock And Roll'.

Utilising 80's electronically biased influences and a twenty-first century, R&B-esque vocal delivery, Capital C streams out her words with honey-laced sweetness on this catchy pop work. The slightly weird coming together of 'sounds' from across the generations together with Capital C's silky delivery is a bit like Gwen Stafani plays The Human League - get it? I have to say it works pretty well but I find the mix quite intriguing - to the point of being strangely likeable yet somehow weirdly awry; Capital C's vocals are given almost equal levels to the pulsating backdrop giving the song a really strange feel - quite unlike anything I can currently think of. Whatever, it still works!

I'm not too sure that Capital C will be able to break in the UK with 'Too Sweet For Rock And Roll' - her press pack tells of fame and fortune in Australia and I can easily see why she's so successful. I can also envisage her doing well in some of the European and 'eastern' countries like Russia and Japan etc. But, I don't think the song is strong enough for the wider music market-place; there's just something lacking that I can't quite put my finger on. Now, I'm not knocking Capital C at all; I just can't see 'Too Sweet For Rock And Roll' catching on here - perhaps it is indeed 'too sweet'!

I can't fault Capital C's vocal qualities though - she's definitely got something very special in her voice - again, a bit like Stafani maybe (in a slightly convoluted way!) - maybe less obtuse but similarly pleasing and just as sensual. 'Too Sweet For Rock And Roll' by Capital C will no doubt do extremely well in her homeland and possibly elsewhere but I don't think it's right for 'us'!
