Play 90 second soundbite of 'History Girl' @ 'CD quality'
At times acutely angry, at times acceptably angular, at times darkly discordant, at times a trifle challenging, at times bordering on subliminal subtlety, at times very art-house - 'Godard's Girlfriend' is all of these but, what a remarkably refreshing and rewarding piece of work!! Class by any standards - a modern, melodic rock gem to bring new hope and promise to an all-too-often unenterprising music scene!!
Calvin Party should be congratulated for their originality but, more than that, they should be commended for their courage in taking a musical option that flies in the face of indie tradition and puts a big question mark against the whole modern scene by stripping things down to a level that's scrumptiously simple yet breathtakingly brave. Calvin Party, if you want a comparison, remind me somewhat of the naively nursery-rhyme-ish but remarkably tangible lyricism of Syd Barrett, the understated but punchily quirky infectious-ness of late 60's, just-bubbling-under popsters, Idle Race, a hint of the twangy, cutting edge bravado of The Byrds and much of the simplistic rock attitude of The Kinks and The Small Faces - all carefully assembled with 21st century compositional maturity and sprinkled with more than a touch of honest rock modernity and nerve-tingling originality!! Quite a mix then?? Well yes, but Calvin Party, at the end of the day don't need to be compared to anyone - this outfit stand alone to be counted for exactly what they are and hopefully they'll earn proper respect purely on their amazing talents in all things musical.
If you haven't already guessed it, I absolutely love 'Godard's Girlfriend' by Calvin Party. The CP's describe their music simply as 'alternative' and I can't argue with that. But, please don't be put off with that 'alt' tag - Calvin Party are different, Calvin Party are taking a slightly unusual road but, Calvin Party are nothing short of brilliant!! I thank God that there are still bands out there that are prepared to push at a few musical boundaries and swim against the flow; my Dad used to say that "If we all walked down the road the same way we'd never meet anyone" - I'm glad that Calvin Party walk the way they do - Calvin Party are as refreshing as hell and 'Godard's Girlfriend' is a stunning outing!!
