Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks is the brainchild and alter ego of Ontario electronics experimentalist Anne Sulikowski and 'Secret Land' is the album spawned from the depths of Sulikowski's soul; a gently vibrant electro-tapestry of sound and aural texture of the highest order! A modern-day Terry Riley methinks - another 'rainbow in curved air', another experimental musical excursion into 'music is the drug' territory!
Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks (what a beautiful name, by the way, and oh so suited to the kind of music that evolves here!) lays down seriously hypnotic repetitious drones, groans, squeaks, blips and acid trips (well, maybe not the last it just sounded cool!) that nestle sensitively behind her whispery, often sexy sounding voices and dialogue exchanges. Seemingly simple sounds providing the backdrop to Sulikowski's evocative ramblings and erogenous outpourings. Sounds that slip in and out of and through and across the ether with alarming ease but are much more complex and descriptive than they appear.
Make no mistake, Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks is targeted straight at the grey matter - this aint no dance-party electro outing this is seriously therapeutic as well as being restful and elucidating. What appears to be simple moans and ambient tones is far deeper and further reaching; its title, 'Secret Land', kinda tells the story here - listening to this excellent album is like visiting 'another' place, a place that's hard to find but once found brings rewards in the form of serenity and peace, a dreamy, quiet place where you won't come to any harm. Sulikowski plays with your mind as she toys with her beloved 'musical' equipment - analogue and digital converted to one being and given out with warmth and passion so that we may partake of its glistening prize and be better for the experience.
'Secret Land' by Building Castles Out Of Matchsticks is an elegant and rewarding musical experience that takes very little from you but gives plenty back - a stunning example of modern art-house electronic ambient experimentation - simple and simply divine!
