Buck Brothers

CD - Me

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Run, Run, Run, Run, Run' @ 'CD quality'

London based, Anglo-Irish-Swedish outfit, Buck Brothers specialise in, and I quote, "Predatory-Power-Punk-Pop". Well, yes I suppose I can just about see that! Certainly Buck Brothers utilise punkish riffs and fills amongst the 'pop' melodies and the result is pretty punchy if not totally 'predatory-power'.

Instrumentally these guys pile it on damn well and their 'chunes' are repetitively moreish. For me the vocals, although clear, just lack sufficient 'power'; somehow lacking in angst - but maybe that's just me looking for something their description promises.

Big bass riffs tend to drive the Buck Brothers machine; those punchy lines are infectious and work very well. Repetitive guitar work adds a bright element to the engine room that's stoked by un-fussy but sympathetic drums and when it all comes together there's still plenty of room for the vocals to breath. All-in-all, Buck Brothers do their thing pretty damn well. The songs are quite individualistic with some unusual timings and strangely quirky lyrics thrown in - slightly B52's at times. These guys seem to have an inherent sense of fun as they go about their business and that fun element comes through well in their songs.

Again, for me the end result, although pretty well polished, just lacks the killer blow, the angry young men attitude, the kick-ass delivery. It's not hard though to envisage Buck Brothers kickin' up quite a storm in and around the mosh-pit. Many of the songs have anthem like qualities which I'm sure the buck Brothers faithful will get off on time and again.

'Me' by Buck Brothers is good but not great. If they could just inject some real 'balls' into the mix it would make all the difference.
