Bootis

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 4/2/05

Bootis, the concept, was born about five or so years ago. That line-up eventually parted company and the adventure that was Bootis lay dormant until quite recently. Vocalist Andreya Triana, sadly, had left Worcester to go to Uni' in Leeds. There she met up with Damien Ramsurn (Fender Rhodes), Jamie Robertson (drums), Chris Hargreaves (bass) and DJ Sinical (Mark Joyce) (decks) - and the spirit of Bootis was re-kindled and subsequently reborn!! So Worcester's loss was Leeds' gain!!

Bootis have been gently honing their act and gelling together whilst getting some pretty impressive gigs and mentions. Tonight Worcester was once again lucky enough and privileged enough to have the chance to experience this outrageously talented unit as they laid down a set of extremely sophisticated sounding jazzy vibes. Bootis describe what they do as 'an eclectic of nu-soul with fusions of funk, soul and jazz'. What I witnessed tonight leaned heavily on the jazz side with Andreya's powerful, sensual voice confidently and classily oozing style over some pretty complicated and impressive instrumental work from the guys. A set of mainly original pieces with a just a couple of drop-dead brilliant covers thrown in; in particular a stunning and totally original reworking of 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' which they turned into something truly amazing!

Andreya controlled the show with maturity well beyond her young years. She seemed totally on top of things, had a great rapport with her audience and showed what a great talent she is. The rhythm aces of Jamie and Chris were tight, totally supportive and laid down some nifty grooves for Damien to work his Rhodes magic over and DJ Sinical to punctuate with purposeful scratching. What I saw here tonight suggests that Bootis have a potential that could grow exponentially. With their combined as well as individual talents Bootis could take this thing off the planet. They're good, bloody good!!
