Right from the off I was impressed by their attitude to the gig. They took to the stage quietly and just got on with the work in hand. There's no big ego's in Bookerfinch. No bullshit. No messin'. Just quality musicianship and quality songs. I suppose they fall into the lighter side of the rock genre although they're also very punchy and up front. The line up consists of acoustic guitar, bass, drums and keys/harp. The acoustic guitar (and I happen to love 'rock' bands that use acoustic guitar) automatically gives Bookerfinch that lighter edge. And then there's the vocals - a great lead with loads of energy and two supporting vocalist coming together to provide superb two and three part harmonies. Put this together with a shed load of self penned songs and the recipe tastes pretty good.
The way Bookerfinch use the keyboard is quite stunning and put together with the punchy, kick-ass bass it gives a massive, almost orchestrated, sound that's very impressive. Their songbook too is very impressive. From the slow and soulful 'Wading Out Here' through the catchy harmonica passages of 'Silent Slippers' to the heavier and moody 'The Reaper' with its wailing vocals and wall of sound backing (and much much more) they have a total thing goin' on.
Having gigged together for several years they've put together a act that is not only impressive but totally absorbing. No two songs ever sounded the same tonight which in itself is a bonus nowadays. The set was fresh, professional and tight.
Bookerfinch have a great edge to their songs. They look great on stage. They put loads of emotion and effort into their set. They've got everything they need really. Very impressive. Very entertaining. They certainly did it for me!!
