Black Britanyaa prove that, despite much evidence to the contrary, Brits can do hip-hop; 'The Windrush Vol 2' is a really great album of universal hip-hop that tries to re-shape the genre slightly by adding 'world' influences to the normally very American 'street' genre.

'The Windrush Vol 2' celebrates the music and stories of the 'immigrants' in a way that allows hip-hop to raise itself up with multi-racial instrumental nuances whilst retaining the 'street' identity of the form. Black Britanyaa keep their feet firmly rooted in the hip-hop camp whilst allowing their story telling lyrics to reach out to a wider audience; it's sufficiently 'different' hip-hop that is mature, clever and pretty bloody commercial. F'rinstance, listen for the 'borrowed' snippets of some classic songs, listen to the way Black Britanyaa reference historical immigrant music with hints of reggae and ska.

'The Windrush Vol 2' is a work that's well conceived and beautifully executed; even if hip-hop's not your thing, there's plenty here to admire and enjoy - don't discount this just because it's out of your normal comfort zone - give Black Britanyaa a chance - you might be surprised - the feet'll soon be tappin', the buzz'll quickly get yer!

Now, I'm no expert on hip-hop or its many sub-genre bastardisations but I can usually tell a decent song when I hear it. 'The Windrush Vol 2' by Black Britanyaa isn't yer typical hip-hop album; less pretentious than most, more 'educational', there's more to this than meets the eye (or should that be ear!), not 'gangster' rap, not self-indulgent, not at all offensive or 'ugly'- this is educated 'street' music with lyrics to make you think, that you can associate with. 'The Windrush Vol 2' is a tasty work and deserves to be heard and enjoyed!
