Benita Johnson

EP - Stars & Fireflies

Play 90 second soundbite of 'All That Glitters' @ 'CD quality'

Described as 'organic', and I can clearly see where that comes from, Benita Johnson's 'Stars & Fireflies' EP, is just about as stripped down as it gets. Beautifully, almost magically, simplistic this is about as pure and as clean as it gets really.

This all original offering is sublime in its form; totally chilled acoustic nu-folk which hints at urban country. Johnson delivery can be pained and tearful or just as equally bright and optimistic depending on the mood of the song. Her guitar style is uncluttered and punctuative rather than fussy or showy. Although maybe a tad mournful sounding, Johnson's songs are honest and gritty and her vocal work beautifully reflects the songs' moods as they change.

I see Benita Johnson as a 'proper' acoustic virtuoso; not selling out to potential chart banality but sticking firmly to her descriptive musical poetry in true singer/songwriter style. That's not to say Benita Johnson isn't commercial - just cultly commercial!

This six track introduction to the extraordinary talent of Benita Johnson is sufficient to whet the hungry appetite for all that's good about contemporary acoustic music. Vocally, Johnson gives an emotionally charged performance and her naturally empathetic touch and dexterity instrumentally adds great depth to her impressive writing and vocal delivery. It just doesn't get simpler, smoother or any more emotional than this!

Benita Johnson's 'Stars & Fireflies' is pure, slick and pretty stunning - a small taste of some amazing things to come and one to watch out for, methinks!
