Backdoor Blues Corporation

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 19/10/01

Oliver Carpenter  Mike Ferguson  Tony Bayliss  Neil Worrall  Tony Cole

This five piece band have been playing together for a very long time - and it shows. A together, tight, 'blues' based unit that specialises in covers. However, their covers aren't just copies by any stretch of the imagination - they do their own, well worked arrangements to some very well known classic songs.

The band are, Oliver Carpenter - vocals and trumpet, Tony Cole - bass and backing vocals, Neil Worrall - guitar, Mike Ferguson - drums, harmonica and backing vocals and Tony Bayliss - keyboards.

Tonight was the first time I'd managed to catch up with them after many months of cajoling by Jim Malley (ex of the Dragon) and I'm glad I went along. Covers bands aren't my thing but, covers with a difference are - tonight fell into the latter category! Great versions of 'Jessica', 'Take Me To The River', 'Stormy Monday' were just a few of the goodies on offer. A couple of medleys of, 'Steamy Windows'/'Gimme Some Lovin' and 'Forever Man'/'Summer In The City', were thrown in to great effect along with some slower, more bluesy stuff like 'Guilty'.

BBC performed in a very relaxed manner with lots of strange banter and messing about included. As musicians they're extremely competent and produced a really big, full sound with lots of keyboard in evidence. Olly's trumpet gave a fresh feeling to many of the songs and his strong, often gravely voice belied his stature. They performed an excellent, two part set with great professionalism which had many of the audience dancing all over the room.

Well worth a look and a listen - thanks again to Jim Malley for convincing me to come along. I'll be back!!
