Play 90 second soundbite of 'Superheroes' @ 'CD quality'
Allen is clearly a man who lives in his music; as each track unfolds you can feel Barry Allen's self-belief and ambition. 'In The Shade', if I have to be totally honest, aint gonna worry the likes of David Gray or Damien Rice - Barry Allen's music is enthusiastic and workmanlike but not really in the same league - kind of a modern day Peter Sarstedt if you will! That said, Barry Allen does have a certain 'boy next door' appeal; 'In The Shade' sounds distinctly like high quality urban poetry put to well thought out music and delivered with tangible heart-on-sleeve gusto.
'In The Shade' by Barry Allen is also a real worker; by re-visiting Allen's impressive songs you'll find yourself slowly being drawn in and really starting to get to know the man and feeling his music. There's also a naturalistic charm to Allen's music; no matter what the 'theme' of the song Allen feels soft and cosseting rather than harsh and strident - very pleasurable, very likeable! I can see Barry Allen doing extremely well on the acoustic 'tour'; his friendly way will win hearts and his infectious songs will win minds.
Barry Allen's light, slick delivery lifts the songs and gives them a nice soft edge and what this guy lacks in grit and grind he more than makes up for in affability. 'In The Shade' is simplistic in form and easy on the ear - Allen keeps it beautifully real and sensitive and never drifts off into self-indulgence or public wallowing. The production is clear, crisp and sympathetically understated which totally suits Allen's unimposing qualities. The boy done good!!
'In The Shade' by Barry Allen may not take the world by storm but it will have its takers and those takers can rest assured that their money will be well spent and offer them hours of beautifully simplistic acoustic music straight from the heart!
