Arthur Ebeling

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 10/4/05

Simplicity was the key to Amsterdam's Arthur Ebeling's set tonight - simplicity with more than a touch of style. Ebeling's bag's a classy mixture of jazz edged rhythm & blues with just a hint of contemporary folk thrown in tonight for good measure. Using just voice, guitar, foot tapped rhythm accompaniment and a hotel desk bell and with a little help from a double bass player Ebeling won the hearts and ears of his audience with ease.

His set comprised some excellent originals and a couple of unusual covers. The set however felt a little unprepared as Ebeling dug deep into his repertoire to showcase his musical versatility but above all his amazing guitar skills. Man does Arthur Ebeling know his way around that guitar!! Plus, with a voice reminiscent of the smoother side of Tom Waits and a pretty laid back approach Ebeling's got a great recipe for success. Think jazz cafe somewhere in Amsterdam or Paris. Think classy jazz vibes. Think cool and laid back. Think friendly banter with a smattering of humour. That's it, you've got it, that's Arthur Ebeling!!

Many of Ebeling's works have a distinct Tom Waits feel to them but, don't get me wrong, Ebeling doesn't try to be Waits, he's just obviously heavily influenced by him. Nowt wrong with that!! As an introduction to Arthur Ebeling this short support set certainly hit the spot - and not just with me either - most of the rest of the audience seemed pretty taken in by it all too.
