Speace absolutely 'cracks' the genre - 'Songs For Bright Street' is a real pearl; homely, organic, perfectly rounded, polished and a valuable reminder that the form of 'country' music isn't cast in concrete and isn't immovable - it's a flexible entity that can be vibrant, evocative, truly worthy and all-encompassing.
Baltimore's Amy Speace injects massive feeling into her straight-talkin' lyrics and between her and The (excellent) Tearjerks they infuse a gritty wholesomeness into the genre. With guitars ranging from crying resonator and steel to scowlin' slide, to earthy pickin', this combo bring new hope and fresh passion to the often maligned and frequently misunderstood form that is loosely country-folk. Instrumentally perfect, vocally supreme - you really have to hear this album to fully appreciate its natural beauty. It's a little gem with real heart, genuine soul and great passion.
